CFSL, SFSL & RFSL

Forensic Science Laboratories in India are organised at three levels to provide scientific support to the criminal justice system. Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSL) function under the Directorate of Forensic Science Services, State Forensic Science Laboratories (SFSL) operate under respective state governments, and Regional Forensic Science Laboratories (RFSL) serve the districts within a state.

These laboratories house specialised divisions such as biology, chemistry, physics, toxicology, ballistics, questioned documents, DNA and cyber forensics. They examine physical evidence collected from crime scenes and provide expert opinions that assist investigating agencies and courts in the administration of justice.

Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL)

CFSLs are premier laboratories that handle cases of national importance and complex investigations referred by central agencies such as the CBI. They are equipped with advanced instrumentation and highly qualified scientists across multiple forensic disciplines.

State & Regional Laboratories (SFSL / RFSL)

SFSLs cater to cases within a state while RFSLs decentralise forensic services to the regional and district level, ensuring quicker examination of routine evidence and reducing the burden on state headquarters.
